The papers graded and returned to students and the whole promise of summer had filled the air. Okay, so she only had a month off until summer school started, but it was a month. She wanted to go do something and if she wasn't quite sure what that something was, she'd figure it out.

It seemed to involve going home at least partly, though. She really ought to do that more often.

And she wanted to see Fred. It had been a while since their shopping trip, and she'd gathered a bit about what had happened with Illyria. It was sort of hard to keep things like that secret in the Realm.

So, Boston it was. She packed Noah a few things to play with, intending to drop him off at her parents' house. They'd taken to the whole grandparent gig with more verve than she'd expected, but it was a good thing. The pools wouldn't be open yet, and the ocean too cold to swim in, but there was nothing to say they couldn't just go wander on the rocks or something, so she grabbed a towel and sunscreen and hiking boots until really she'd packed far too much for a day's outing, but she didn't care.

She was bouncing out the door, the taste of freedom teasing at her senses when a hand closed around her arm.

"Where are you going, my Lady?"

She shot Fergus a look. "It's Keelia. Not 'my Lady.' Keelia. And I'm going to see a friend back home."

"Your classes are over."

"Yes. Thus the seeing a friend bit instead of going to work." Why was he scowling again?

"I'm coming with you." It was announced, not asked, like some sort of final pronouncement. She glared.

"Why?"

"It's not safe."

That got a roll of the eyes. "She hasn't caused a problem in almost a year." Almost exactly a year, in fact, and if she paled a bit at that, well, she was pale anyway. It likely wouldn't be noticed.

"Still. You freed her."

"Uh huh."

"And she hates you."

Keelia shrugged a bit, kicking at the door with one foot.

Fergus took that as assent.

"Therefore, it's not safe for you to go running around without an escort."

"I'll have Fred."

"Who is?"

"My friend."

"Is this Fred a suitable body-guard."

"She builds weapons to decapitate demons?"

He looked mildly impressed at the last, but not as much at the finding out she was another young lady. And one who consorted with demons.

"I think I should go."

He was standing in her way now and really, he was a dear to be concerned and underneath the arrogant male assumption that she couldn't take care of herself--which granted, he'd seen her dead more than alive, so he might have some reason for thinking that--she saw real worry. Caring. Maybe not for her, but no doubt for Midir. She sighed and gave in.

"All right. But you have to be nice. We're going for fun. Keep weapons out of sight and smile."

He gave her an amused look, then flashed a charming smile. "Like this?"

She couldn't help smiling back. Stupid Sidhe. "Yes. That will do."

They dropped Noah off, and then there were the requisite introductions and her traditional Irish parents slightly flailing at the advent of yet another of the Gentry into their lives. Keelia waited it out, as patiently as she could, agreeing that they'd stay the night and she'd spend all day tomorrow with them, guaranteed, and they finally let them go.

She grabbed the truck, glad for once of its age which would let the three of them sit comfortably across in the cab. She had directions to the new house, and they headed out of town to find it, and Fred, and hopefully a pleasant distraction or two.

Fred slipped out of bed first that morning, and truthfully she wasn't sure what everyone was doing, other than giving her the space that she went back and forth on if she wanted it or not. Sometimes the quiet was wonderful, and sometimes it was impossibly loud.

She'd claimed a few of Wesley's books about Slayers, and their history, and had gone to the front porch to tuck up her feet and read. All the green surrounding the house was a bit brighter from the rain, and she enjoyed the view. There had been a brief craving for orange slices, but considering the age of the books she was reading, Fred settled on a bottle of water and started to read.

She figured if she was really going to help with the school, and teach, she should know more.

Keelia found the house after a couple of wrong turns. As she parked in the drive, she gave Fergus another look.

"Be. Nice."

He pouted, sending her a wounded look back. "I'm always nice."

She muttered something about except when he was blocking the way, then hopped out.

"Fred!"

Fred was beginning to think that maybe she'd hadn't picked the best of reading materials. As interesting as all the history was, it wasn't exactly the stuff that hearts were eased by. But she was distracted from those thoughts by the sound of a familiar voice.

"Keelia," Fred called out to her, actually finding a smile, spurred on by the pleasant surprise. "I wasn't expecting you at all. This is the best bout of not-expecting I've had in a long, long time."

"I needed to get out after two weeks of paper grading," Keelia said as she got closer. "So it was sort of impulse. It's not a bad time is it?"

Fergus trailed behind her, looking over the house for signs of a threat, though relaxing a the familiar magical signature that seemed to be woven into it.

"Keelia," Fred chided, welcoming the ease her friend brought with her. "You don't get to ever be associated with 'bad' times. You should know that by now."

Standing, Fred collected both books, and eyed the stranger with a bit of curiosity. But wonder wasn't wariness, and Fred welcomed that over the other.

Keelia grinned slightly, with a shrug. "I never know how busy people are when it gets into my head to visit."

She leaned against the steps and gestured to Fergus. "This is Fergus. He's Midir's second-in-command. Fergus, this i my friend, Fred."

"Don't worry about busy, really. Besides, this..." She gestured at the porch. "It can't look busy to you."

Fred smiled softly, and nodded in his direction.

"It's nice to meet you." She shifted the books into one hard to extend one hand to shake in welcome.

Fergus smiled, as he'd been told to, and bowed over her hand. "It's nice to meet you as well."

Keelia did not roll her eyes, with difficulty, hiding a smile.

Fred blinked, looking from Fergus to Keelia in open confusion. She wasn't even sure what to do with her hand now that it was still just sitting there, unable to shake his. Her fingers curled a bit, but she kept her smile.

Fergus smiled again and released her hand, stepping back.

Keelia gave them both amused looks. "He does that. It's the whole fairy court thing..."

Fred looked at Keelia with one more flash of her smile, before grabbing Fergus hand before he could totally pull away. She shook it firmly.

"Don't mind me," she offered with a slight drawl when he looked at her. "It's a Southern thing."

This was good, Fred thought. An unexpected visit from a friend was good.

Fergus smiled and noted the hand shaking. It must be a mortal habit, from the way Keelia was looking.

"I shall remember."

Fred just shook her head. "You don't have to remember, or anything as formal as that. It's just what I do."

She took two steps, and looked over to Keelia again.

"Do ya'll have time to come in?"

Keelia grinned. "We are at your disposal. I just thought we could hang out."

Fred looked at the house again, then them, before pushing open the door and holding it open for them to come inside. She put both books down on a nearby table.

"...any ideas?"

"I brought towels, if we want to wander down to the beach. It's not that far from here. Or. ... I don't know. It's so pretty out."

Keelia went inside, followed by Fergus, who looked around, once again, alert, just to be sure.

"The beach sounds wonderful." She looked at Fergus outside, and sent Keelia a questioning eye. "Actually, I've never seen the Atlantic before. And I guess there's just never really been a time to go."

"How haven't you been to the ocean yet?" Keelia said, slightly awestruck.

Fergus finally came in, looking around the house. "I haven't seen it on this side," he volunteered.

"I've been to the Gulf lots, and of course the Pacific, but no, I haven't been to the ocean here yet. I don't exactly get out much."

Not that she minded, and there wasn't even a touch in her voice to suggest otherwise. Fred looked to Fergus.

"Is that a vote of yes from you too, then?"

He smiled and shrugged a little. "Whatever you ladies wish."

"Then I think that's a yes. Give me just a minute?" Fred settled them in the living room, now fully cleaned up from several nights before. When she went to return the books to the library, she found Wesley there, and after telling him of her plans, Fred slipped upstairs to change into something more practical for the beach. A few minutes later she was back downstairs.

Fergus had settled next to Keelia, who was explaining to him the difference in the beaches from Ireland to Boston. They looked up when Fred came in.

"I'm all ready if you are," she offered quietly. "...unless you would like to see the house?"

"If you'd like to show it, I'd love to see it," Keelia said, standing.

Fred didn't mind, if fact she was pretty proud of the work that'd been done so far. She started with the downstairs. There was the loving and dining room of course, and the kitchen. She'd personally picked out the large, aged wood table that look the place of an island in the center of the room. She passed by the library too.

"They actually had to knock several walls down to construct the librabry, but I know they tried to keep as much of the original character of the house the same."
